what about the mid seventeenth century... my understanding is that around
1650 in Britain, politics and science (or proto-science) were closely
cross-linked, and that the belief in *the apocalypse* was the unifying
linchpin that held together as distinct personalities as John Milton,
Robert Boyle, Hobbes, etc. There remains with us today, I think, a yearning
for the New Jarusalem
