Re: <eyebeam><blast> TNCs

In the modern economy, industrial capital has replaced land as the
income-producing asset everyone ought to own.

The great unanswered question is whether an economy in which almost
everyone was an owner might also eventually alter the irresponsible
behaviour engendered by capitalism itself. The capitalist process by its
nature, encourages infantile responses from every quarter, as people are
led to maximize self-interest and evade responsibility for the
collateral consequences of their activities, the damage to other people
or society or the natural environment. Even if people understand this
dilemma, it is very difficult for them to escape from it without
suffering immediate disadvantage in the market competition. The
atomizing nature of the marketplace itself thus separates people from
responsibility for their own actions, allows them -- or even requires
them -- to detach themselves from the whole.
