"Mercer-Smith liked to compare weapons design to performing an organ
cantata, but with an unusal twist. 'Imagine that someone just walked in
and handed you the music for a Bach organ cantata and said, play it. Well,
this is an easy problem,' he said, because on an organ, every time you
play a key, you can expect it to be the same note. The physics of nuclear
weapons, on the other hand, is non-linear. 'So, if I hit a key here,' he
said, acting out this concert on the table, 'it changes the meaning of a
key over there. You're trying to play an organ that is non-linear and
changing in real time.'"
