Foucault spoke about the hypomnemata, or notebook, that was gaining
popularity at the time of Plato for personal and administrative use. He
claims it was as disrupting as the introduction of the computer into
private life today (1984). It was not only an "aid to memory" but a tool
for creating your self by making it possible to retrieve useful information
easily. With Christianity it became a method of purification and so more of
a method of control. Plato had his doubts about its benefits from the
beginning.

An editor I worked with once told me to keep very good notes on all the
gossip you hear. They can be your retirement fund.
