Public Space Out(s)
SPRING 2008
VIS 213
Room: VAF 366

Tuesday 3:30 to 6:20
Professor: Ricardo Dominguez
Email: rrdominguez@ucsd.edu

Office Hours: Tuesdays 1pm to 2pm (CAL IT2/Atkinson Hall 2nd fl - 2129)

We will be diagraming the *future(s) past, future (s) present and future-future(s) of Public Space and the trajectories of counter-publics and multitudes that fill it up, that disappear within it and that perhaps were never there to begin with. We will be flowing, reading, imagining and re-configuring what we might mean by Public Space. The arc will attempt to link the qualities Demos to demoi, from Agora to mall, from the poetics of space to youtubeness, from post-(bio)politics to particle swarms. Also, we will attempt to capture the currents between Public Space and the Public Sphere post-9/11 globalization and what it might mean to us now when "the future does not need us anymore", or perhaps we are on the brink of new forms of splendid Public Space(s) that as yet have no name and need to be made to order. Readings will included such works as Michel Foucault's Fearless Speech, Michael Warner's Public and Counter-Public, Critical Art Ensemble's Electronic Disturbance, Nancy Fraser's "Transnationalizing the Public Sphere" essay and more. So sit back and Space Out!
