WHEREAS, The California Master Plan for Higher Education called for a tuition free University1; and
WHEREAS, Tuition has been consistently increased since the creation of the California Master Plan, with a 68% jump between 2007 and 2011 alone2; and WHEREAS, students now contribute more into the UC than does the state of California3; and
WHEREAS, the University of California, San Diego, has been greatly impacted by tuition hikes; and
WHEREAS, CLICS Library, the IRPS Library, and the Medical Center Library in Hillcrest, have all been shut down due to budget cuts; and
WHEREAS, since 2009, UCSD has reduced its workforce by over 5.5%4; and
WHEREAS, current workers have had pay and benefits significantly reduced5; and
WHEREAS, several organizing groups, including but not limited to, the New York City Student Assembly, Occupy Education Northern
WHEREAS, On March 4, 2010, UCSD participated in a large walkout which resulted in tangible victories for students; and
WHEREAS, the ASUCSD External Affairs office and the UCSD Public Education Coalition have called for another campus-wide mobilization and walkout; and
WHEREAS, The Associated Students of UC San Diego (ASUCSD) has channels of influence with the administration and Academic Senate, as well as yielding significant student outreach resources; and therefore,
LET IT BE RESOLVED, that the ASUCSD, fully and actively endorse the March 1, 2012 Day of Action; and
LET IT FURTHER BE RESOLVED, that the ASUCSD Campus-Wide Senators actively publicize and inform the campus about the Day of Action and provide resources where they are needed; and
LET IT FURTHER BE RESOLVED, that the ASUCSD College Senators introduce an endorsement resolution to their respective Council; and
LET IT FURTHER BE RESOLVED, that the Transfer, Freshmen (and freshwoman), and five academic Senators actively publicize and inform their constituents about the Day of Action and encourage their constituents to participate; and
LET IT FURTHER BE RESOLVED that all faculty members are encouraged to relocate their classes to the rally; and LET IT FINALLY BE RESOLVED that the ASUCSD calls on the Chancellor and the Academic Senate to fully and actively endorse the March 1 Day of Action.
