In the city of himself, lights went on in the apartments, people settled
down to dinner or got up to dance, block parties started up in the
sidestreets, and the simplest facts of life were celebrated: memory was
accorded a specific rhythmic nod and the basic functions of the brain
inspired spontaneous group gyrations here and there. The basic stuff of
night and day embraced and the undecided sky filled with a rich blend of
color.
