there are two articles worth reading in the september issue of Harper's ( I
don't know if it is distributed outside of the usa ), one by Mark
Edmundson, the other By Earl Shorris.
An small exerpt from Edmundson's piece, make of it what you will;
"Most of my students seem desperate to blend in, to look right, not to
make a spectacle of themselves...the specter of uncool creates a subtle
tyrrany. It's an apparantly easy standars to subscribe to, the
Letterman-like, tarantino-like cool, but once your'e committed to it, you
discover that matters are rather different. You're inhibited, except on
ordained occasions, from showing any emotion, stifled fromtrying to achieve
anythin original. You're made to feel that even the slightest departure
from the reigning code will get you genially ostracized. This is a culture
tensely commited to a laid back norm."
