| html_butoh enacts the "Global Top 500" websites and is choreographed by their
real-time html structure, displaying small video clips, which match each an html tag in the code. The video clips show performers translating the "functionality" of each html tag into movement.
The foundation for making html_butoh run is the "html-movement-library", an open-for-participation video clip database.
The URLs, and therefore the "stage", changes every 3:28 minutes, running through 500 websites within a full day's cycle. Questioning the term "popularity" and the way information is indexed on the Web, this piece engages the public to participate in a new visualization of websites. The idea of combining html with Butoh, a Japanese dance technique, comes from a parallel I found between how a web browser scans through html and displays its content, and how in Butoh a dancer "becomes" an image through her/his movements. By submitting to the html-movement-library every contributor will find her-/himself instantly part of the html_butoh performance. html_butoh is part of a 2006 commission of New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc., (aka Ether-Ore) for its Turbulence web site. The html-movement-library is a web-based repository of short video clips and
images by various performers who use
html tags, such as <HEAD>, <BODY>,
<TABLE>, as a starting point for generating
movements. The idea of the library is to
develop an expandable movement alphabet
of the html language. The goal of the html-
movement-library is to provide different
materials for visualizing the architectures and
language-structures of websites in projects
such as html_butoh and Website
Impersonations: The Ten Most Visited and
more. YOU can participate now in truly Web-based performances. With submitting your video clips of "html-movement performances" to the library you are instantly included in participating and creating a new visual experience of websites! Send in your video clips. installation/web + performance 03/28/07 - 06/08/07 The html-movement-library unfolds as an environment in the gallery space. Visitors are invited to browse, and to add their ideas to the library. As a "data enactment", the library and its projects are based on translating the Web's data representations into choreography. Website Impersonations: The Ten Most Visited, a performance event during the show, will utilize the material submitted during the show and online. In this installation "old classics" of Website wigs such as
microsoft.com, google.com
and now - upcoming and new -
Website Wigs, Interrupted such as apple.com, intel.com, and others, will be presented in a "networked" environment.
The installation will show how these websites are linked among each other: their
interlinked structure online is shown in a large
hairy diagram across a large wall area in the gallery space,
constituting some sort of wig-to-wig protocol.
The folder structures within links are visualized
through the amount of pins from one wig to the
other. Some wigs will appear in "full" structure, being built four levels down into the html structre of their site, others present themselves as "interrupted" wigs. What happend: A server crash? Singing Website Wallpaper gives voice to html by re-interpreting the code of three Websites such as yahoo.com, msn.com, and google.com as a musical score and visualizing the scales as
printed patterns on wallpaper. While the sound component of the installation is influenced by the "live" html code of each site, the wallpaper shows "frozen" source code from
each site translated into a visual set of functionality-related symbols. Depending on how the momentary html code of the site is structured, the program matches the acccording sound files to each html tag.
For instance, if the html tag "table" appears in the code, my program (php) will interpret and "sing" the tag as "a", "b" and "e", as they are notes in musical notation. The same goes, for example, with
the tag "head": we hear the "h", "e," "a," and "d." "h" exists in German music notation, so there is an extra "note" to sing... Exhibition extended until June 8, 2007 at MediaNoche, 161 East 106 Street, First Floor, New York, NY 10029, Tues-Sat 3PM-7PM. |
