In honor of the Zapatista's march on Mexico City of
1,111 indigenous people, New York area Zapatistas-in-spirit marched on
the New York Mexican Consulate's invite-only, ruling-class, celebration
of Mexico's independence from Spain on the evening of Monday, September
15, 1997.
People began to gather near Times Square at 7:00
p.m.
The group marched to Town Hall.
One protestor wore the face of neoliberalism,
while denunciations were read.
Another wore the face of Zapatismo.
Some celebrators were curious and came close.
Others watched from a distance.
This one was eager to join the celebration inside.
Inside Town Hall a young woman greeted the celebrators.
Not everyone that passed by was well dressed.
An old woman and a young man meet.
After awhile the NYPD arrived and dictated protocol.
As is their practice the police forced people behind
barricades.
Soon people left. This one took a taxi.
