TAKE BACK OUR STREETS
HELP END ILLEGAL TRUCKING IN SoHo
CLEAN AIR --- TRUCK SAFETY RALLY
THURSDAY, OCT. 21, 5:30-7:00 PM
BROOME AND LAFAYETTE STREETS
ASSEMBLE AT THE PUFFIN ROOM (435 Broome) AT 5:00 PM

Bring Flashlights & Whistles

For too long, our community has been victimized by illegal tractor trailer traffic. Broome, Houston and Canal Streets are unlawfully used by more than a thousand tractor trailers daily. Over-length, over-weight, or off of the truck route, these monster trucks, thicken our air and lungs with toxic exhaust, menace pedestrians and motorists alike, destroy public and private infrastructure, break the peace at night and in general destroy street life in our community. Trucking will get even worse over the next year when Fresh Kills is closed on Staten Island. Garbage that is now transferred out of Manhattan by barge will now be trucked out through the Holland Tunnel. There will also be additional tractor trailers transporting municipal waste from Brooklyn. They already number in the hundreds daily.

It's time for action. Join your neighbors, make your voice heard and protest the inaction by the Mayor's office on, this critical issue. Join COUNCIL MEMBER KATHRYN FREED, STATE SENATOR TOM DUANE & ASSEMBLY MEMBER DEBORAH GLICK and demand change.

Your attendance is critical. Bring your kids, pets and drag along your neighbors. Bring flashlights and whistles. A large turnout is imperative to create a political issue. The next two years are major election years. Send a message to the politicos that our urban environment must not be sacrificed to unplanned economic activity. The problem of tractor trailers impacts communities throughout the City. Activists from Hunters Point, Flushing, Williamsburg, Red Hook and the West Village have all vowed to attend.

Our agenda includes:

*24 hour zero tolerance enforcement at the Holland Tunnel & Williamsburg and Manhattan Bridges.

*Passage of Council Member Kathryn Freed's legislation that would limit truck size in NYC to 33 feet. The same limitation is already in place in Wall Street and Mid-Town.

*Increased recycling budget and legislation that would require all businesses to recycle.

*For the Dept. Of Transportation to post signs in accordance to law advising trucks of length, weight and route restrictions.

This rally is sponsored by Trees Not Trucks, Transportation Alternatives, The Tri-State Transportation Campaign and Right-Of-Way & Friends of Hudson Square.
