Olly was a curious fellow. He woke each morning clapping his hands, saluting the day. He would not stand for depression. That was for others. He had quite a bit to be mornful about however. After surviving an attempted suicide three years ago this May, Olly lived with the knowledge that he was the sole witness, though a quick momentary witness, to a grotesque and horrifying rape
that occured as he fell past the clear, sun painted windows on his way down from the top of a seven story high building. The victem, the nine year old daughter of a resident janitor in the Haugh Building, had caught Olly's eye in a seemingly impossible fraction of a second in time. The hulking figure whose body penetrated the young girl was none other than Pheobis Matter, a foul-smelling,
shitcake of a man who ran the advertising department at Haugh industries, Inc. Olly believed for a long time that the only reason his life had been saved - an open truck carrying wall installation stopped and parked in just the right spot to catch him - was to right the wrong that had been done to little Laura Landry. Yet as much as he felt the hands of divine intervention, as much as he felt repulsed,
no, disgusted with Pheobis-the-uncaught-pedophile Matter's actions, he could not bring himself to get involved. At least not until after he left his house one bright February morning and found the first message. It was written in the sand, presumably with a stick, he first thought when he encontered it on his morning walk. Some child has left a message to his secret friend or . . . his thought trailed off as he read
with both fascination and horror simoltaneously the words YOU SAW IT OLLY.
