JIM COSTANZO
STATES OF SIEGE
a multimedia installation

This installation was exhibited at 450 Broadway Gallery in SOHO then traveled to the University of Dayton in Ohio and Middle Tennessee State University.
The work is based on the artist's experiences living across the street from Tompkins Square Park in the East Village of Manhattan. During the 7 years he lived on East 7th Street there were a series of riots, mini-riots, disturbances, demonstrations and homeless encampments. He would walk home through riot police and demonstrators then watch the events unfold on the tv news. Over time, images and reports of Tompkins Square were dwarfed yet intermixed with those of Desert Storm, the L.A. Riots and other incidents.

The web site is like the gallery installation in that is has three interrelated parts:
computer imagery,
traditional photographic montage
and video.
